Autostarting applications in Fluxuan v5

Today I installed Fluxuan v5 (amd64) on a removable drive. No problems whatsoever with the installation, all in all a really smooth proces.
I'm quite happy with the overall lite setup, looks and performance. The conky is helpful to explore the current keybindings (which in time I probably will adjust to me own preferences).

Meanhile I did replace a few applications and routines. ROXTerm is now default terminal, medit was added as texteditor and firefox-ESR replaced qutebrowser. I've also installed picom compositor to add real transparency to apps like conky and terminal.
I will probably be looking at possible replacement of some memory-hungry services/apps, like connman+cmst for network-manager. This all in good time.

I noticed that none of the running apps were started from ~/.fluxbox/startup (eventhough I could add add startup commands for e.g picom). I guess that a number of services and applications are autostarted from /etc/xdg or directly by fluxbox; but for the life of me I can't figure out how (for example) conky is auto started - or how it can be disabled/enabled at login...
Can you please guide me where/how the process is initiated ?

Re: Autostarting applications in Fluxuan v5

Btw, nice changes , I do love simple .... good looking WM`s ,

You probably did not see all off the fluxbox startup

Right click on your desktop go to Configuration Fluxbox startup -> scroll down and you will see conky & + the rest you can remove change what you want

Re: Autostarting applications in Fluxuan v5

My current Fluxuan desktop.
Upgraded fluxbox v/1.3.5  to v/1.3.7
Replaced connman (over network-manager) / firefox (over qutebrowser) / pcmanfm (over Thunar) and removed orphaned dependencies (a.o. xfce4 related)
Added picom compositor and various gui applications like rofi, yad, gimp, mirage, audacious, mpv etc - and many related tools/scripts/configs.
Overall still a rather skinny setup; filesystem on disk size ~3.4Gb ; Memory consumption at startup ~175Mb (with conky and volumeicon disabled). Nice!
I do notice some slight white flashing when opening/closing a terminal window, but cannot find the cause for this odd behaviour. Any ideas?

Re: Autostarting applications in Fluxuan v5

Sorry ceeslans just now noticed your question , stupid me smile)
the white flashing has something to do with picom and the fade effect , experimented a little with it if i may suggest changing picom with a lighter alternative

xcompmgr

and add in your startup

#for fade in out effect add f after -c and F after -C EX: xcompmgr -cf -CF -t-5 -l-5 -r3.3 -o.33

xcompmgr -c -C -t-5 -l-5 -r3.3 -o.33 &

I have not experienced any flashes yet smile)

Re: Autostarting applications in Fluxuan v5

Thanks for your explanation about the fading effect in the compositor. Disabling the fading setting solved most of the white flashing.
I knew about xcompmgr, but somehow this light application refuses to apply shadows to my thunar and terminal windows. Now compton is doing the job correctly- and at more or less the same low memory consumption as xcompmgr.

Re: Autostarting applications in Fluxuan v5

xcompmgr does apply dropshadows

here is a example

this was used

xcompmgr -c -r10 -D3 -C -o0.8

first image is without xcompmgr

now this is with

Re: Autostarting applications in Fluxuan v5

Finally installed the fluxuan_5.0.6_amd64 release today on a fast usb3.2 drive. It took me literally 3 minutes to install - and booted into a fresh fluxuan desktop. Ran the necessary connmanctl commands to enable + scan wifi and establish connection to my network.
I appreciate you opted for connman/cmst (over network-manager) and pcmanfm (over thunar); also leaving selection of additional tools and applications to the user. Meantime I added quite a few, such as pipewire-audio, firefox-esr, gimp, audacious etc.
Thanks for this excellent release!

Re: Autostarting applications in Fluxuan v5

Amazing Desktop !!!!!!!

I love the way you made it your own.

Yes i decided on PcmanFM becauseThunar was installing xfce bloat with it .

Connman with CMST is a lot more lighter and faster, why i haven`t used it before, was support for VPN , but now it was added .

pipewire-audio you don`t really need in Fluxuan beside alsa you have apulse if you check in - Right click menu / Configuration / Edit menu you will see:

[exec] (Web Browser) {apulse x-www-browser}

- this starts your firefox with Apulse.

Apulse uses only parts of the PulseAudio API that are crucial to specific applications and it updates value of LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to point also to the directory where apulse's libraries are installed, making them available to the application.
Name comes from names of both ALSA and PulseAudio. As aoss was a compatibility layer between OSS programs and ALSA, apulse was designed to be compatibility layer between PulseAudio applications and ALSA.

Qutebrowser i used because uses Qt and QtWebEngine by default (and supports QtWebKit optionally). QtWebEngine is based on Google’s Chromium. With an up-to-date Qt, it has much more man-power behind it than WebKitGTK+ has, and thus supports more modern web features - it’s also arguably more secure.

In /home/Your-User/.config/qutebrowser -> you have config.py where you will see that it uses the same hosts file as pi-hole to block your ads in the same folder you will see another folder named greasemonkey with 3 scripts adguard / translate / youtube skip - adguard is a ad-blocker youtube-skip will auto increase speed of ads and skip them if adguard fails to block them plus it never jumped 1 gig of memory on my laptop.
In Fluxuan widevine is already installed in Qutebrowser so you can just click Netflix from the https://start.fluxuan.org and play.
Now i have opened 7 tabs / 1 of them playing Netflix , 2 pcmanfm windows and a few instances of featherpad and my memory usage is at 947 mb.

Next plan is to add a script that will automatically set the screen Resolution and if there is another atached monitor to be set in the left of the main one. if 2 then one left one right and so on when you start Fluxuan and in the installer i want to add Encrypted Installation.

Next will be a Raspberry Pi .img

And in the future if anyone has the time to get involved I want to create a new OS for children, i looked for something for my little kinder but nothing out there to hit the spot . I saw a few distros but most unmaintained or not what is needed , something simple and easy to learn linux on .

I hope you can stay on this journey with me ...

Thank You so much for being there !
